The Science of the Maternal Line

Within nearly every cell of your body are tiny structures called mitochondria.
They are often described as the powerhouses of the cell because they help convert nutrients into the energy our bodies need to live, grow, and heal.
But mitochondria carry something else.

Inside each mitochondrion is a small amount of DNA that is separate from the DNA found in the cell's nucleus. This genetic material is known as mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA.
